چکیده

Motion sickness is a well-known nausea and vomiting syndrome whose physical signs include vomiting and retching, pallor, cold sweating, yawning, belching, flatulence, and decreased gastric tonus. Subjective symptoms include stomach discomfort, nausea, headache, feeling of warmth, and drowsiness. The research literature has been well reviewed 0-7). Over the past hundred years, our perspective on the kinds of sensory stimulation that can cause motion sickness has broadened considerably. Originally it was assumed that motion sickness can only be caused by motion and is due to mechanical stimulation of visceral afferents or changes in cerebral blood flow caused by body motion. It was eventuaJl~ recognizee; thai people who have no inner ear halance or~an fUIlction are totally immune, indicating thai the l11alaa~ results specifically from veStibular ove;·-'lilllulation. However. by 1970 it became apparel1i that a more comprehensive etiologic frame\\ ork was needed: some forms of motion sickness were recognized in which head and body motion is normal (that is. spectacle sickness_ space sickness) or even absent (flight simulator and Cinerama sickness). We experience vigorous vestibular stimulation when we run, jump, or dance, but these activities almost never make us sick. Claremont (8) had originally suggested that mo-

The Evidence Based Etiology of Space Motion Sickness

Space Motion Sickness (SMS) was reported on the second orbit of the second manned flight. Almost five decades later there is no satisfactory etiology [1]. Virtually all approaches to the problem to date are based on the concept of motions which produce conflicting responses from different sensory modalities. [1,2] Characteristic symptoms are triggered by such sensory conflicts through vestibula...

Simulated viewpoint jitter shakes sensory conflict accounts of vection.

Sensory conflict has been used to explain the way we perceive and control our self-motion, as well as the aetiology of motion sickness. However, recent research on simulated viewpoint jitter provides a strong challenge to one core prediction of these theories -- that increasing sensory conflict should always impair visually induced illusions of self-motion (known as vection). These studies show...

Are evolutionary hypotheses for motion sickness "just-so" stories?

Vertebrates have evolved rapidly conditionable nausea and vomiting reflexes mediated by gut and brainstem receptors, clearly as a defense against neurotoxin ingestion. In 1977 Treisman proposed that sensory orientation linkages to emetic centers evolved for the same reason, and that motion sickness was an accidental byproduct. It was an "adaptationist" explanation for motion sickness, since it ...

Self-induced motion sickness in unperturbed stance.

Motion sickness typically occurs when the body is subjected to externally imposed motions, but there are situations in which sickness occurs in the absence of imposed motion. We report a new and unanticipated instance of the latter. Subjects in a study of spontaneous standing postural sway sometimes reported dizziness and motion sickness. Reports of sickness were correlated with changes in post...

Combined pitch and roll and cybersickness in a virtual environment.

BACKGROUND Stationary subjects who perceive visually induced illusions of self-motion, or vection, in virtual reality (VR) often experience cybersickness, the symptoms of which are similar to those experienced during motion sickness. An experiment was conducted to test the effects of single and dual-axis rotation of a virtual environment on cybersickness. It was predicted that VR displays which...
